KRISTOFFER NORIEL ORDOÑEZ

BUILDING ONE OF THE PHILIPPINES' MOST AMBITIOUS CONSERVATION TRAILS

Kristoffer is currently leading an ambitious conservation project in the Philippines: the development of the Sierra Madre Nature Trail. The vision is to create the country’s longest interconnected hiking trail, stretching approximately 815 kilometres across the Sierra Madre mountain range, the longest mountain range in the Philippines.

For Kristoffer and his team, the project represents something much bigger than a trail. It is about connecting landscapes, supporting conservation, and creating opportunities for communities to engage with and protect the natural environment.

Strengthening the skills to lead complex conservation projects

Before taking WildTeam courses, Kristoffer had already been involved in several conservation initiatives. However, stepping into a leadership role on such a large and complex project required a deeper understanding of how conservation programmes are designed and delivered.

To build those skills, he enrolled in several WildTeam courses, including: Project Planning, Grant WritingProject Management and Stakeholder Engagement.
“The courses helped me realign with the standards of how conservation work should be done.”
For Kristoffer, the training helped reinforce best practices and provided a clearer framework for approaching conservation work.

Bringing structure to landscape-scale conservation

One of the most valuable aspects of the training was understanding how the different elements of conservation projects fit together. Large initiatives like the Sierra Madre Nature Trail involve many moving parts, from strategy and funding to stakeholder engagement and implementation.
“It helped me see how everything fits together. The strategy, the planning, and the people involved.”
This broader perspective allows Kristoffer to better organise and coordinate the work needed to bring such an ambitious project to life.

Applying conservation training in the real world

The Sierra Madre Nature Trail project is a major undertaking. When completed, it will stretch over 800 kilometres, making it the longest trail of its kind in the Philippines. Developing a project of this scale requires collaboration with communities, coordination across landscapes, and long-term conservation planning.

For Kristoffer, the skills gained through WildTeam training are helping him approach these challenges with greater clarity and confidence.
“The knowledge I gained has been really useful in thinking about how conservation projects should be structured and delivered.”

Advice for future conservationists

Kristoffer believes that building both knowledge and practical skills is essential for conservation practitioners. While experience in the field is invaluable, having the right frameworks and tools can help conservationists design stronger projects and deliver more meaningful outcomes.
“Training like this helps you think about conservation work in a more structured and strategic way.”
